About Me
Hi, I'm Martyn!
I'm a Game Designer with a Masters Degree in the field and over two years of industry experience, working on titles such as Zombie Army 4 and Southfield. I specialise in prototyping, game mechanics and level design in the Unreal Engine and Unity.
From a young age games have been a huge passion of mine. Some of my favourite childhood memories centre around gaming; from playing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater on the PS1 at breakfast club to sneaking over to my friends house to play GTA: San Andreas (which my parents would under no circumstances allow me to play, much to my 8 year old self's dissatisfaction).
To cut a much longer story a fair bit shorter, eventually, I realised that playing games wasn't enough. I wanted to understand how they worked and searched for what went on under the hood. I found game design.
I enjoy making something different with every new creation, I love the challenge a new perspective or genre can bring to my design principles. I grew to love technical and level design the most throughout my time at university. The task of creating an entire level and mission from scratch. How I can use the level design to tell a story through visuals, cinematography and mechanics. It all engaged with me on a very deep level.
But it's not all just games. In my spare time I enjoy reading and writing screenplays. My love of screen writing is born out of a life-long love of film. I often say that my local movie theatre is like my second home.
I have a deep love for cinematography and editing, I am constantly fascinated by the how and why of pacing and shot composition in a scene. My favourite cinematographer is Roger Deakins, from How to Train your Dragon to Blade Runner 2049, his work is epic, awe inspiring and endlessly creative.
I try to remain active, walking as much as I can and going to the gym has helped keep my mind clear and my body healthy.
I recently moved from England to marry the love of my life and I'm now a proud permanent resident of Canada, looking for opportunities over here in North America.
