Work Involved:

Game Design

Level Design

Enemy/Fauna AI

Engine used:

Unity

During my second year at Radical Forge, I worked on Southfield as a Technical Designer. I worked across multiple elements from the early ideation stages to full scale production. My main areas of focus were on quest design, NPC AI, crop types and weather systems.

During my time on this project I significantly improved my understanding of the Unity engine and Visual Studio for prototyping purposes. Using the skills I developed, I was able to prototype much of the games essential systems.

I created attack patterns and systemic behaviours for enemies and fauna. I created an enemy that would seek out your plants and steal them, a giant beast who would ram into your player made structures and more. I worked with the character art, programming, animation and SFX department leading the team for this feature.

I was also tasked with creating quests within a live service format, focusing on repeatable tasks with a variety of solutions and scalable rewards for the player. I created quests for daily, weekly and monthly engagement as well as concepts for community based challenges. This included a dynamic, randomised multi-step quest system that was designed to give the player a fresh quest every day.

I took part in the early stages of developing unique crop types and modifiers, this involved analysing existing gameplay mechanics and designing crops that melded with the gameplay elements and worked within the existing design frameworks for modular crops. Alongside this, I prototyped a dynamic weather system that would effect crop growth rates based on that crops preferences.

During these tasks I produced clear design documentation, kept them up to date with changes and alterations. I also pitched design concepts to team leads across multiple disciplines and lead early paper prototype sessions of core systems.

Overall, I remained flexible, working across multiple fields of design and always making sure I was a valuable asset to whatever I was working on.
